BinDayApp ("the app", "we", "us") is a free Android app that shows household bin collection schedules for supported councils in the South West of England. This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and how you can remove it.

What we collect and why

Your postcode and address

When you add an address, you type a postcode or tap "use my location" to have the app detect it. The postcode is sent to postcodes.io (Ideal Postcodes), a free, open UK postcode lookup service, to find your council and a list of addresses at that postcode. Once you pick your address, its UPRN (the unique property reference number UK councils use) and a short address label are stored on your device and sent to the relevant council's data source each time the app checks your bin schedule.

We don't ask for your name, email, or phone number.

Your location (optional)

If you tap "use my location" instead of typing a postcode, the app asks for your device's current location — only while you're on that screen, never in the background — and sends the coordinates to postcodes.io to work out your postcode. We don't store the coordinates themselves, and this step is entirely optional; typing your postcode does the same job.

Notifications (optional)

If you turn on bin-day reminders, the app registers a push notification token with Expo's push service, which delivers the notification via Firebase Cloud Messaging. That token, your saved addresses, and your chosen reminder time(s) are stored on our server (a Cloudflare Workers KV store) so we can remind you the evening before collection. Turning notifications off deletes that server record immediately, not just marks it inactive.

What we don't do

• No ads, no advertising SDKs
• No analytics or crash reporting (no Firebase Analytics, no Crashlytics, no Sentry, nothing equivalent)
• We don't sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers
• No accounts, so there's no password or profile to manage

Third parties involved

• postcodes.io (Ideal Postcodes) — postcode/address lookups and GPS-to-postcode conversion
• Expo — relays push notifications to your device
• Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) — the delivery channel Expo uses to reach Android devices
• Cloudflare — hosts the servers that fetch council bin data and store notification tokens; this is our own infrastructure, not a separate data-sharing partner

How long we keep your data, and how to delete it

Saved addresses, UPRNs, and your device's notification data live only on your device and our server until you remove them. You can:

• Remove a single address at a time using "Remove" on that address, or
• Tap "Clear all data" on the Addresses screen to delete everything immediately — every saved address, on this device and on our server — with nothing left behind, or
• Uninstall the app, which removes everything stored on your device.

Children

BinDayApp isn't directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the "last updated" date above.
